Q & A with Steve...
Where were you born?
A suburb of St. Louis. Sort of a small town within a big city. If I'd stayed I'd probably be mayor today.
How long have you been in radio?
Full time for over 20 years. My first professional job was at WMCL in McLeansboro, Illinois, in 1986. I have some great memories of McLeansboro. My favorite restaurants were Dairy Queen, Dairy Queen and Dairy Queen. (I hear they have a McDonald's now.)
What did you do before radio?
Pretended I was on the radio. As a kid I'd record song introductions and newscasts on a cassette recorder. That didn't pay the bills so I waited tables, sold cheese, worked as a gardener, sold shoes... then went to a broadcasting school in St. Louis.
Are you married?
Happily. Deb's her name and why she chose on me I'll never know. We live in Champaign.
What are your favorite foods?
You name it I'll eat it, though I try to eat healthy. If I'm not eating my wife's fantastic cooking then I tend to chow down at some of Champaign's great local restaurants.
When you're not on the air what are you doing?
I golf, I read (fiction and non-fiction), volunteer, cycle and run.
What's the best thing about working at WIXY?
The employee gym on the 5th floor is amazing. And the on-call massage therapist is a nice perk. Really, though, working for the area's top radio station is awesome. The listeners of WIXY are some of nicest, most down-to-earth people anywhere. And Champaign-Urbana's just a great place to live. |
